Is CitedWriter a Jenni AI alternative?
Yes. CitedWriter has AI autocomplete, citations, PDF chat and outlines like Jenni, and adds verified-only citations, a literature-review table, a similarity and AI-likeness pre-check, an AI-use log for your supervisor and Indian thesis templates. It is free; if optional paid third-party services are added, you pay only what they cost us.
Can the AI invent fake references?
No. The AI never writes citations. You pick papers from OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Crossref, arXiv and PubMed, and each one is checked against Crossref or OpenAlex (title must match the DOI) before it can be inserted. Imported references stay “unverified” until they pass.
Will my university treat this as cheating?
CitedWriter is a research and writing assistant. Every AI suggestion is recorded in a tamper-evident log you can share with your supervisor, and it writes the AI-use declaration many universities now ask for. Follow your institution's rules on AI use.
Is the plagiarism check the same as Turnitin or DrillBit?
No. It compares your draft with scholarly abstracts, your PDFs and your other documents and shows the UGC 2018 level, so you can fix problems early. Your university's official check (DrillBit/ShodhShuddhi or Turnitin) covers more sources.
Which languages does the AI write in?
English. Citations, references and exports work for papers in any language.
Do I have to pay anything?
No. CitedWriter is free and our AI runs on our own servers. There are no paid plans. If we add an optional paid third-party service, it will be opt-in and charged at exactly what it costs us, from credit you load, with every charge itemised in Settings.
Can I check a reference list someone else wrote?
Yes, with the free reference checker: paste up to 30 references, DOIs or BibTeX, no sign-in. Each entry comes back verified, mismatch (something real was found but a field such as the DOI or year disagrees) or not found. Not found does not always mean fake: some books, reports and theses are not in Crossref or OpenAlex. What you paste is not stored.
Is the AI-likeness score proof that text was written by AI?
No. AI detectors are unreliable, especially for non-native English writers. Treat the score as a hint; your AI-use log is the real record.
Does CitedWriter write my whole essay or thesis for me?
It helps you write: autocomplete, edits on text you select, an outline, continuing your text, an abstract. You stay the author, and every AI action is logged.
Can I use it for a UGC PhD thesis or an AICTE project report?
Yes. There are templates for the UGC PhD thesis (2022 regulations) and AICTE M.Tech / MBA / MCA and B.Tech / BE project reports, with a structure check that lists missing sections.
Can my supervisor comment on my draft?
Yes. In a document choose Review → Create read + comment link. Anyone with the link can read the document and leave comments without an account; they cannot edit. You can also share your AI-use log with its own link, and revoke either link any time.
Does it work with Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote?
You can import a Zotero library directly (user ID + API key), or import BibTeX or RIS exported from Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote, and export references as BibTeX or RIS. Two-way Zotero sync is not available yet.
Can I use it with Overleaf, Word or Google Docs?
Yes. Export LaTeX (.tex) with a matching .bib file for Overleaf, or Word (.docx) to open in Word or Google Docs. You can also start by importing a .docx draft. A Word or Google Docs add-in is not available yet.
Which citation styles are supported?
APA 7, MLA 9, IEEE, Chicago (author-date and notes), Harvard and Vancouver. Change the style and every citation updates.
Do you train AI on my documents?
No. Your documents are private to you and never used to train AI models.
Why is the AI slow sometimes?
Our AI runs on one shared server. When several people use it at once, requests wait their turn and autocomplete pauses briefly. The editor says when a request is queued, and the status page shows it live.
Can I chat with a PDF?
Yes. Upload a text PDF (up to 25 MB) and ask questions. Each answer quotes the page it used, and a green tick means we found that exact quote on that page. Scanned PDFs without selectable text can't be read yet.
How do I sign in? I forgot my password.
There is no password. Enter your email and type the 6-digit code we email you. Check spam if it doesn't arrive.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Delete account. It removes your account, documents, library, PDFs and logs from our live database at once; nightly backups are gone within 14 days.
