Citations and the verification gate
How search, verification, styles and bibliographies work.
Search
The Cite panel searches OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Crossref, arXiv and PubMed at once and merges duplicates. Select a paragraph and click Find sources to search for papers that support it.
Verification
When you add a paper, we look up its DOI (or arXiv/PubMed id) in Crossref or OpenAlex and check the registered title matches. Only verified papers can be cited. If a paper can't be verified, we tell you why.
Inserting
Put the cursor where the citation goes and click Cite on a library paper. Add a page number if you quote. Citations show as chips; the reference list is generated when you export and shown in the References panel.
Styles
APA 7, MLA 9, IEEE, Chicago (author-date), Harvard and Vancouver. Change the style from the toolbar and every citation updates.
Import and export
In Library, import a .bib or .ris file, paste BibTeX, or connect Zotero with your user id and a read-only API key (zotero.org/settings/keys). Imported entries are marked unverified until you click Verify all. Export your library as BibTeX or RIS any time.
